Fraser Health Celebrates their in motion challenge champions!!!
Fraser Health launched a three month long in motion challenge on April 2nd, 2007. The challenge was a great success and our in motion workplace champions efforts have been a big contribution to that success.
To thank the champions for all their efforts in motion had a breakfast celebration at the Legacy Centre on the morning of June 19th. Several dignitaries also joined in to celebrate their success including Minister Hogg, Mission Mayor James Atebe,
MLA John van Dogen, MLA Mike Dejong and acting Fraser Health CEO Betty Ann Busse.
The Fraser Health in motion Challenge focused on increasing physical activity, as well as encouraging increased fruit and vegetable consumption and tobacco reduction. The excitement began building late in March as we held fun and energetic meetings with our champions. When the pilot project launched April 2nd the staff were ready and the registration numbers came pouring in. By the second week of the challenge almost 700 employees had registered. This number continued to grow throughout the challenge.
The Champions organized and implemented many different challenges at their work sites including:
Nutritional lunch n’ learns
Healthy Pot lucks
Entering names in draws for prizes for completing steps, activities and eating fruits and vegetables
Stair challenges such as elevator free day and the 272 step challenge
Bocci Ball at lunch
Volley Ball at Lunch
Walk at Lunch days
Some of the champions even created a walk a lunch day to pick up litter!
One of the most successful components of our challenge was the virtual Race to Panama. Over 77 teams of 10 registered for the race to Panama. Employees could enter their steps on a daily basis and view a map to see their progress. The website also showed the progress of all the teams on one page and who was in the lead. The Ultimates took first place on May 26th with K.B and the Sunshine band in second on May 31st. There has been so much enthusiasm with this race that the winning teams didn’t stop anyone else. A new team even registered after May 26th. There has been so much excitement over this challenge that the staff purchased over 800 pedometers! What a lot of fun that creates in the halls at work.
People often bring donuts and sugary foods to share at work, so in motion thought let’s create a new trend with ‘Take a Veggie Home Day’. BC Hot House generously donated 40 cases of peppers. We delivered cases of red, yellow and of course orange peppers to our champions. True to champion form, our champions jumped in and handed out peppers to Fraser Health staff in Abbotsford and Mission. Lots of great comments were heard and it was another fun Fraser Health in motion challenge event.
The fun was continued at the breakfast event to thank our champions, with some physical activity included as well as a healthy breakfast. The dignitaries and pilot team cheered our champions on as they collected their well deserved certificates. All in all it has been a great three months of supporting healthy lifestyles and creating camaraderie amongst our staff.
Once again we would like to say thank-you to all our champions!
